The shape of a stone is one of the first things you notice about a ring or pendant — and one of the most personal choices you will make. Shape is not the same as the diamond's cut grade (how well it is faceted and how it returns light); it simply means the outline of the stone. These same shapes apply to any faceted gem, so whether you are looking at a natural diamond, a lab-grown diamond or the moissanite pieces we make, the vocabulary is identical. Here is what each one looks like and what tends to draw people to it.
Round brilliant
The round brilliant is by far the most popular shape, and for good reason: its 57 or 58 facets are engineered to maximise sparkle and brightness. It is the classic, do-anything choice that suits every style and setting. Because it is so in demand, it is usually the priciest shape per carat.
Princess (square)
The princess cut is a square shape with sharp, clean corners and plenty of fire. It offers a modern, geometric look and a lot of brilliance for the money, which makes it a favourite for those who want sparkle in a contemporary silhouette.
Emerald cut
The emerald cut is rectangular with cut-off corners and long, straight facets arranged in steps. Instead of intense sparkle it produces broad, mirror-like flashes of light — an elegant, understated, art-deco feel. Its open table also shows clarity clearly, so it rewards a cleaner stone.
Oval
An oval is essentially an elongated round brilliant. It keeps the round's lively sparkle while the stretched shape can make the stone look larger for its weight and can flatter and lengthen the finger. It has become one of the most requested shapes for engagement rings in recent years.
Pear (teardrop)
The pear combines a rounded end with a single point, like a sparkling drop of water. It is romantic and distinctive, works beautifully as a pendant or a ring, and, like the oval, can appear larger than its carat weight suggests.
Cushion
The cushion is a square or rectangle with soft, rounded corners — picture a plump pillow. It has a warm, slightly vintage character and scatters light in a soft, glittering way that many people find especially charming.
Marquise
The marquise is a long shape with two pointed ends, a little like an eye or a boat. It has one of the largest surface areas for its carat weight, so it makes a real statement and elongates the hand.
