Hoops, Huggies, Studs or Drops? How to Choose Earrings That Suit You

Earring styles from our collection

Earrings do more for a face than any other piece of jewellery — and the style you choose changes the effect completely. Here's the honest guide to the four main families, and how to pick the one that actually suits you.

The four families

Studs sit directly on the lobe — the most versatile and comfortable style, sleep-friendly in small sizes, and the default for workplaces and minimalists. Hoops are rings that circle through the lobe, from subtle 15mm to shoulder-grazing statements; they add instant polish and read slightly dressier than studs. Huggies are the small, thick hoops that "hug" the lobe closely — the comfiest hoop variant, hard to snag, and hugely popular for everyday wear and stacking. Drops and dangles hang below the lobe and add movement — the most eye-catching family, and the natural choice for evenings and occasions.

Matching style to face shape

Face shape Most flattering Why
Round Drops, long dangles Vertical lines lengthen
Long / oval Studs, hoops, huggies Width balances length
Square Round hoops, curved drops Curves soften angles
Heart Drops that widen at the bottom Balance a narrower chin

Treat this as a starting point, not a rule — confidence beats geometry every time.

The thing nobody checks: weight

Comfort in earrings is almost entirely about weight, and most listings don't mention it. As a guide: under 3g per ear you'll forget you're wearing them; 3–6g is comfortable for a full day; beyond 8g is occasion territory. We list the per-earring weight on our product pages — our Textured Groove Hoops, for example, are 3.7g each — so you know before you buy. If you have sensitive ears, check the post material too: sterling silver posts (S925) are the safe standard, and all of ours are exactly that.

Building a small, complete rotation

You genuinely need only three pairs to cover life: one pair of quality studs (pearl or plain metal) for every day, one pair of hoops or huggies for polish, and one pair of drops for evenings. Everything after that is joy, not necessity.
