Platinum is the most self-sufficient of all the precious jewellery metals — it does not tarnish, does not need re-plating, and is dense enough to survive generations of daily wear. Does platinum tarnish?
No. Unlike silver, platinum does not react with sulphur in the air, and unlike lower-carat gold alloys it will not dull from oxidation. Platinum jewellery is also used at very high purity — commonly 95% (hallmarked 950) — so there is little alloy metal present to misbehave. What platinum does instead is develop a patina.

Over months of wear, thousands of microscopic scratches soften platinum's bright mirror finish into a warm, satiny glow known as patina. Here is the interesting part: when platinum is scratched, the metal is largely displaced rather than shaved off — it moves aside rather than being lost. Platinum's stability means household knocks like perfume or hairspray will not corrode it — but films of oil and soap still hide its lustre, so a monthly clean keeps it bright.
