A necklace and a neckline are a partnership. Get the pairing right and the two frame each other beautifully; get it wrong and even a lovely necklace can feel lost or cluttered. The trick is to let the necklace either echo the shape of the neckline or deliberately fill the space it leaves. Here is a simple guide, neckline by neckline. V-neck

A V-neck is one of the easiest to dress. It naturally draws the eye downward, so a pendant that mirrors that V — a drop pendant or a Y-necklace sitting just above the point of the neckline — looks effortless and balanced. Avoid anything so long it disappears past the base of the V.

Crew neck and high necks

A high, closed neckline gives you a blank canvas. Longer necklaces work brilliantly here: a long pendant or a layered look sits against the fabric and adds length. Chokers and very short necklaces can also look modern above a crew neck, but avoid mid-length pieces that land awkwardly on the collar.

Scoop and round necklines

Follow the curve. A necklace that echoes the rounded shape — a curved pendant or a shorter necklace that nestles inside the scoop — looks harmonious. Princess length (around 45cm / 18″) tends to sit perfectly.

Boat neck and off-the-shoulder

A wide, horizontal neckline is best matched with a shorter necklace or a choker that sits close to the throat, above the fabric line. A collar or a short statement piece complements the horizontal line without competing with it.

Strapless and sweetheart

With bare shoulders and an open décolletage, you have room to make a statement. A choker or a short statement necklace fills the space elegantly, or a pendant that sits in the centre of the neckline draws the eye inward. This is the neckline for your boldest pieces.

Halter and one-shoulder

These necklines are already doing a lot around the neck, so often the kindest choice is to skip the necklace entirely and let statement earrings or a bracelet do the talking. If you do wear one, keep it minimal.
