Coastal, nautical and 'mermaidcore' looks keep coming back — and jewellery is one of the easiest ways to wear the trend all year round. The sea gives us some genuinely beautiful materials: pearls, iridescent shell, turquoise and larimar. Here's what each one actually is, and how to style them.
The materials, honestly explained
Freshwater pearls
The original ocean gem — though most pearls in modern jewellery, including ours, are freshwater pearls grown in mussels in lakes and rivers rather than saltwater. Their soft, watery glow is exactly the coastal aesthetic. Baroque (irregular) pearls, like those in our Ocean Shell Pearl Drops, have an organic, sea-worn look that suits the theme perfectly.
Abalone shell
Abalone (also called paua) is a sea shell, not a pearl — it's the iridescent inner lining of a mollusc shell, flashing blue, green and violet as it moves. Turquoise
Turquoise's blue-green is one of the most recognisable colours in jewellery and reads instantly as coastal. In the Aqua Bloom Necklace it sits alongside baroque pearls on an adjustable chain.
Larimar

How to wear the coastal look
Ocean jewellery leans blue, green and pearl-white, so let those tones do the work and keep metals simple — silver and rhodium read cooler and more coastal, while warm gold gives a sun-on-the-water feel. One iridescent or blue-green piece is usually enough; pair a statement abalone earring or turquoise necklace with plain studs elsewhere so it doesn't compete.
A practical note: shell, turquoise and larimar are softer and more porous than a hard gemstone, so keep them away from perfume, sun cream and — ironically — the sea and pool. Put them on last, and wipe gently after wear.
