Nobody walks into a jewellers and asks for copper. Yet look closely and it is everywhere: it is the 7.5% that makes sterling silver strong, the metal that gives rose gold its blush, and — as brass — the base beneath most gold-plated jewellery. Here is the story of the most underrated metal in your jewellery box.
Where is copper mined?
Chile is the world's largest copper producer by a wide margin, home to some of the biggest open-pit mines on Earth. Peru, China, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the United States are also major sources. Most copper comes from enormous open-pit operations working porphyry deposits — huge volumes of rock in which copper is finely scattered, often at grades below 1%. That means well over 99% of what is dug up is not copper at all.
How is copper processed?
Ore is blasted from vast open pits, often less than 1% copper
Milling and froth flotation concentrate the copper minerals
Smelting produces blister copper, around 98–99% pure
Electrolysis deposits 99.99% pure copper cathodes
Pure copper is alloyed into sterling, brass, bronze and rose gold
Sulphide ores follow the route above: flotation, smelting to blister copper, then electrorefining to 99.99% purity. Oxide ores take a different path — heap leaching, where dilute sulphuric acid trickles through crushed ore, followed by solvent extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW), which plates pure copper directly from the solution.
Why is copper in so much jewellery?
Copper was one of the first metals humans ever worked — and alloying it is one of humanity's oldest technologies. Mixed with tin it made bronze and named an entire age of history. In jewellery, small amounts of copper transform soft precious metals into ones tough enough to wear daily:

Does copper turn your skin green?
Sometimes — and it is completely harmless. Copper reacts with sweat and skin oils to form green compounds that can transfer to your finger. It happens more with high-copper jewellery worn in warm weather, and it washes straight off. It is chemistry, not an allergy and not a sign of "cheap" metal — even rose gold can do it in small ways. What else is copper used for?
Jewellery uses a sliver of world production. Copper is the second-best electrical conductor among common metals (after silver — which is far too expensive to wire a house with), so electrical wiring and electronics dominate demand, followed by plumbing, construction and, increasingly, electric vehicles and renewable-energy infrastructure.

The short version
Copper is mined mostly from vast open pits at grades under 1%, concentrated by flotation, smelted and electrorefined to 99.99% purity. In jewellery it works backstage: strengthening sterling silver, colouring rose gold and forming the brass beneath plated pieces. The occasional green mark it leaves is harmless chemistry — not a quality problem.
