How Is Platinum Mined? Why the Rarest Jewellery Metal Takes Months to Refine

When Spanish colonists first encountered platinum in South American rivers, they dismissed it as a nuisance — an unmeltable "little silver" (platina) that got in the way of gold panning. Today it is one of the most valuable industrial and jewellery metals on Earth. Here is where it comes from and why it is so hard to win.

Where is platinum mined?

Platinum supply is extraordinarily concentrated. Around 70% of the world's mined platinum comes from South Africa, most of it from a single geological formation: the Bushveld Igneous Complex, an ancient layered intrusion holding the richest platinum reserves known. Russia is the second major source — largely as a by-product of nickel mining around Norilsk — followed by Zimbabwe and North America. Compare that with gold, which is mined commercially on every inhabited continent, and you begin to see why platinum carries scarcity in its price.

How rare is platinum compared with gold?

Considerably rarer, by the numbers that matter to jewellery. World mines produce many times more gold than platinum each year — annual platinum output is only a few hundred tonnes at most. Winning it is brutal work: platinum ore grades run at just a few grams per tonne, so several tonnes of rock must be mined and processed to recover a single troy ounce, much of it from hot, deep, narrow underground reefs.

Why does platinum take months to refine?

Because it never travels alone. Platinum occurs alongside five sister metals — palladium, rhodium, ruthenium, iridium and osmium, together known as the platinum group metals (PGMs) — plus nickel and copper. After the ore is crushed, concentrated by flotation and smelted, separating six chemically similar metals from one another requires a long chain of dissolution and precipitation steps. From rock to pure platinum can take months — one of the longest production journeys of any jewellery metal.

What is platinum used for?

Jewellery is only part of the picture. The largest single use of platinum is in catalytic converters, where it helps convert exhaust gases into less harmful ones. It also appears in laboratory equipment, glassmaking and medicine — platinum compounds such as cisplatin are important chemotherapy drugs, and platinum electrodes are used in pacemakers, because the metal is so stable inside the human body.

Is platinum jewellery better than white gold or silver?

Different rather than better. Platinum is used at around 95% purity, is naturally white, does not tarnish and holds stones securely — but it costs substantially more and develops a soft satin patina with wear that some people love and others polish away.
